The Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) is a 22-item self-report measure designed to assess subjective distress associated with a specific traumatic or stressful event. It evaluates three areas of posttraumatic stress: intrusion, avoidance, and hyperarousal. Respondents rate how much they have been distressed or bothered by each symptom during the previous seven days. The IES-R is commonly used in clinical and research settings to assess trauma-related symptoms and monitor changes in symptom severity. It is based on DSM-IV PTSD symptom concepts and has not been updated to fully reflect DSM-5 diagnostic criteria.

Author(s)
The IES-R was developed by Dr. Daniel S. Weiss and Charles R. Marmar as a revision of the original Impact of Event Scale developed by Mardi J. Horowitz, Thomas C. Wilner, and William Alvarez.
